Grant Tuer at Ayr 7/10/2021

Grant Tuer at Ayr on Thursday 7/10/2021

One of my favourite trainers is Grant Tuer as when it comes to the handicap he is one shrewd cookie. He has two interesting runners at Ayr on Thursday. I like to follow Grants horses and I assess each one he runs. Have a look and see what you think as I think these two have a good chance.

With One Hart in the 4.25 Ayr it was not immediately obvious why he thought it had a chance.

When you look in to the situation it becomes clearer. First of all I was worried by the ground but One Hart’s dam performed well on soft and his half-sister from the same dam won a race on soft to heavy so it should be no concern. He has won at the trip three times on the all-weather. This is a class 5 and he has won at class 4 level as recently as February.

One Hart had wind surgery in July then changed trainer to Grant on 8 September.  He has had two mediocre runs on the all-weather since joining the yard where it looked like the handicapper had him by the short and curlies as proven by his 1lb drop after his last run.

There is an odd quirk with this horse. The all-weather rating is 78 and the turf rating is 71. This is true for many horses but in this case it very strange as the sire’s progeny generally much prefer the turf.

I think Grant thinks that there is untapped potential in this one.

As I stood making my coffee it dawned on me that with the useful Oliver Stammers on board claiming 5lb One Hart will be running 12lb lower than his all-weather mark.

Taking all this in to consideration this should be a good EW bet.

4:55 Ayr

1m5f Virgin Bet Raceday Handicap Class 6 3yo+ 0-65

It took me a while to realise what he is up to in the 4.55 Ayr where he runs the 3yo gelding Buford.

He is only 2lb higher than when he won a class 5 race 3 races ago at Doncaster by 1 ¼ lengths and the rub of the situation is that Grant is rising him in trip in a class 6 race where he claims 6lb being the only 3yo. It’s hard for class 6 horses to give away 6lb. It’s especially hard to give it away to a horse that has won a class 5.

Buford has been in good form since being gelded but had a disappointing run when beaten favourite last time which will help add value to the price.

He races prominently and as long as he gets the ground he will be in the thick of the action at the end.

Grant likes to implement the abilities and weight saving of a good claimer so it says something when he uses an experienced jockey like Sam James who has rode on the last two outings and no doubt will have given feedback which will have helped Grant make the decision to place Buford in this.
