Singles, Placepot and Quadpot Newmarket Saturday 25/09/21

Newmarket looks like it should be a good afternoons racing on Saturday and there should be lots of money in the Tote pools. It’s all about the two year olds. According to BBC weather there shouldn’t be any rain so the going should stay good to firm. The following selections are only recommended for the purposes shown unless they are recommended in a different tips section.

1.15 Placepot 1: Steller Queen

1.50 Placepot 2: Royal Patronage

2.25 Quadpot 1/Placepot 3: Sacred Bridge Win 2/1 Paddy Power

3.00 Quadpot 2/Placepot 4: Perfect Power Win 9/4 Paddy Power

3.40 Quadpot 3/Placepot 5: Chichester EW 8/1 Ladbrokes 1/5 odds 1st 7 BOG*

4.15 Quadpot 4/Placepot 6: Siamsa

*previously recommended on 23rd September with Skybet 9/1 1/5 1st 8 places

The 1.15pm is a 7f class 3 Fillies Maiden for 2yo. It has 11 runners so we have three places available to us to get to round two.  For Placepot purposes I find it is best to remove all the unraced ones first. I know unraced fillies win sometimes but there is nothing apart from faith in the trainer to have them spot on and an examination of the breeding to go on.

Really for the Placepot we need one with some level of form, that has some clue what it is meant to be doing, so there are some more to cross through. This leaves us with Oheka and Stellar Queen to choose between. Oheka may be the favourite but that does not change the fact that Stellar Queen beat her last time out.  To be fair to Oheka she did not get a clear run and she is entitled to progress for a second outing. Stellar Queen should have improved that bit more for the racecourse experience and looks to be the Placepot pick.

The 1.50 is the second race in the Placepot and there are 2 places available as it has only 7 runners. This will of course make our job a bit more difficult. It is a group 2 for 2 year old colts and geldings that will be ran over a mile.

They have level weights so we can see straight away who is well in or well out. We need to get rid of anything that looks out of it. Coroebus will need separate analysis as he has no rating yet. He had a brilliant first run winning over a mile in a good time. It was a class 4 novice stakes and this will be a different ball park. I worry a little about his experience levels compared to the others. The way he is being backed he could end up as favourite. This could be the Appleby effect though. I think there is a stronger choice for the Placepot so I will discount him although I could regret it!

I don’t rate Howth currently as he is by Churchill.  Churchill progeny simply do not do soft ground and if he was going to make a leap forward again he probably would have done so on the ideal ground he has been running on.

This leaves three very serious horses Masekela, Royal Patronage and Oneforthegutter. Oneforthegutter only just got beat last time when losing out by a head at Deauville in a Group 3 that was ran in a good time. That was 7f so a step up in both class and trip are required. I feel the form of Royal Patronage is stronger so I will cross him out.  Masekela is very good and Oisin Murphy says it is the ride he is looking forward to the most on Saturday and that a mile will suit him well. He has come second in a group 2 by a short head and won a listed so far.  The Wootten Basset colt Royal Patronage has been in fine form recently winning twice in the last two runs and could progress again. He won a Group 3 last time out in a good time beating the fancied Imperial Fighter. The sire’s stats suggest he will enjoy running over a mile. It is tough to split a horse who has won a Group 3 and a horse who came a close second in a Group 2 where the winner went on to win a Group 1. Thankfully this is just for Placepot purposes. I will recommend Royal Patronage for the Placepot.

The 2.25pm is a 6f group 1 for 2yo fillies.  There are 13 runners contesting so we have three places available to us. This will be a really good race.

As they are level weights I’ll remove any fillies who look out of the race on the ratings and also I will take a look at anything without a rating. Tenebrism’s yard may have won this a few times over the last few years but Aiden is only just coming back in to form currently after being savagely out of form for a while. Winning a maiden win is a long way from the form needed to win a race like this.

Desert Dreamer looks built for the Placepot but I worry if the consistent placings will continue as he is progressing as well as I hoped he would.

That hasn’t narrowed it down much as there are still eight left in the equation. I’d want to see Flotus achieve a bit more before I really rate him again. Velocidad is a Group 2 winner but there was only 4 runners so how strong is that form I wonder?

After reviewing the remainder I have realised this race is between Sacred Bridge, Sandrine and Zain Claudette who are all excellent fillies. I would be shocked if Sacred Bridge were to be out of the placings and she looks to have the beating of Sandrine and Zain Claudette has already beaten her.

The choice appears to be between Zain Claudette and Sacred Bridge. On the basis that I would be utterly shocked if Sacred Bridge did not win this let alone get placed so I am going for the favourite in this.

With 10 runners three places are available in the 3.00pm. It is an important 6f group 1 for 2yo colts. I have to try not to be biased as I love the 6f Railway Stakes winner Go Bears Go.

There are lots of good ones in this but in the interests of having at least one short section in my analysis of Newmarket I think it will come down to Perfect Power and Asymmetric battling it out for the win with a possible cameo by Go Bears Go for third place.  Both Perfect Power and Asymmetric are likely to improve but Perfect Power will has to improve less to win in my opinion.

I am not going to mess around and make the job more difficult than it needs to be Perfect Power is the choice. His price may be low at 9/4 but it looks too big to me! Perfect Power looks amazing and I hope he gets a clear run this time!

3.40pm The 1m1f Cambridgeshire Handicap boasts a massive field of approximately 35 3yo+ horses with 4 places available.  It makes a pleasant change from looking at the two year olds but is definitely a hard race to pick. I am not going to do a blow by blow account of choosing the winner as I put up details on the website late last night for the horse I believe has the best chance.

It’s a big field of 35 but Hollie Doyle’s mount Chichester looks the one to be on.  This 4yo colt is over half a stone well in on the handicap suffering only a 4lb penalty compared to the 12ib rise the handicapper has given him for his last win.

His last run was really impressive winning a 1m2f class 2 by 6 ½ lengths on good to firm. Even though he was eased at the finish he still laid down a very good time.

Skybet are offering 8 places so an EW bet looks good as there are so many runners.

For the Placepot he will suit us fine!

The last leg of both the Quadpot and the Placepot is 4.15pmLet us hope by this stage we are still in it! At this stage I do begin to wonder at the sanity of picking a Placepot that contains 5 2yo legs! If we make it through though the rewards will be high.

This race is a class 3 maiden stakes race for 2yo to be run over 7f.  There are 10 runners and 3 places available. As usual when I pick the Placepot I will remove anything that has not run before.

This leaves us three horses to consider Thanks Monica, Siamsa and Anificas Beauty. The latter of the fillies does not hold any real appeal. I don’t want to be on the 10/11 favourite who looks under priced for the form shown. I will go for Siamsa who has the benefit of racecourse experience and didn’t do too badly last time coming second on the all weather. I would expect to see improvement from a daughter of Starspangledbanner when she encounters turf for the first time. They usually strongly prefer turf.
